Thuja Removal – Felling, Root Extraction and Haul-Away
Thuja rows planted 20–30 years ago have by now dried out and gone bare in many gardens, attacked by mites or fungal disease – and once a thuja has declined this far, it sadly cannot be saved. We take on the complete removal of old thuja rows: felling, root removal and green-waste disposal, all from one team.
As a first step, we assess whether the hedge really is beyond saving – a thuja that has largely turned brown and gone bare inside will not regrow, and any further care is money wasted. If the row cannot be saved, we take on the complete removal from one team, safely even close to fences, buildings or utilities, and hand the area back so that a new hedge can go in straight away.
Felling, root removal and haul-away from one team
Removing an old thuja row involves three jobs, and we do all three – you don't need to find a separate gardener, machine operator and haulier:
- Felling: we cut the thujas at the base and take them down safely in sections – even next to fences, buildings and utilities.
- Root removal: we lift the root system by machine or by hand, so that a new hedge can go straight in.
- Haul-away: we take away all the green waste and hand the area back clean and prepared for planting.
What affects the cost of thuja removal?
We price thuja removal for the specific row, because several factors decide it together:
- the length of the row, and the height and trunk thickness of the thujas
- the root removal method: machine lifting for longer rows, hand digging in tight spaces
- accessibility: whether a machine can get in, and how far the green waste has to be carried
- the amount of green waste to be hauled away
- the surroundings: how close fences, buildings, paving or utilities are

How do we remove thuja roots?
The dense, spreading root system of a thuja stays in the soil for years after felling, and as long as it is there, new plants cannot establish properly. On smaller rows we dig out the root plates by hand; on old, long rows we lift them out by machine. We haul away the extracted roots, then backfill and level the line.
What should replace the thujas?
Most of our customers order a new hedge along with the felling. In place of the old thujas we most often plant cherry laurel, Leyland cypress for fast tall screening, photinia for striking red shoots and columnar yew for shady spots. In the hedge replacement package, removal and new planting are done in one go, at a better price.
