Photinia Planting

Photinia (Photinia × fraseri 'Red Robin') is one of the most striking hedge plants of all: its fresh shoots glow bright red in spring and ripen to a glossy dark green by summer. It is evergreen, easy to shape and copes well with the Hungarian climate – ideal for anyone who wants more than just a plain green wall.

Photinia is a medium-rate grower (30–50 cm a year) and can be trained into a 2–3 metre hedge. It thrives in sun or partial shade and prefers free-draining soil – so at planting we pay particular attention to soil preparation and drainage. We typically plant at 60–80 cm spacing. Two trims a year keep it in shape, and every cut is followed by a fresh wave of red shoots. Because it is sensitive to frost, we tend to recommend something else for windy sites and frost pockets – at the survey we will tell you honestly where it belongs and where it does not.
