Cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) is one of the most popular hedging plants in Hungary – and for good reason. It grows fast, its glossy evergreen leaves form a solid green wall all year round, and it copes well with pruning, urban conditions and Hungarian winters alike. The key to a successful cherry laurel hedge is quality plant material and careful planting. We work exclusively with container-grown, well-rooted plants from certified nurseries – most often the fast-growing 'Rotundifolia', the compact 'Novita' and the winter-hardy 'Caucasica' varieties. During installation we excavate the planting strip, improve the soil with a nutrient-rich planting medium, plant at the right density (typically 2–3 plants per running metre), then water in thoroughly and mulch the area on request. Cherry laurel planting cost and labour
The cost of a cherry laurel hedge has two main parts: the plants and the installation. The price of the plants depends mainly on their size – a 150–200 cm specimen that screens immediately costs considerably more than a 60–80 cm one – while the number of plants follows from the length of the hedge: we calculate with 2–3 plants per running metre.
The installation labour covers excavating the planting strip, improving the soil with a nutrient-rich planting medium, planting along a string line and watering in. The price is affected by the condition of the soil (stony, heavy or full of old roots), how accessible the site is and the extras you choose – drip irrigation, mulch, removal of the old hedge. What size plants do we install?
We work with container-grown, well-rooted cherry laurel from 60 cm up to 200 cm in height. The size is a choice between your budget and how urgently you need screening:
- 60–100 cm: the most affordable start; planted more densely, it forms a closed hedge in 2–3 years.
- 100–150 cm: a good balance between price and fast screening; closes up in 1–2 years.
- 150–200 cm: instant screening; an impressive, closed green wall in the very first year.
Spacing, planting time and planting depth
Cherry laurel needs 2–3 plants per running metre, which means roughly 33–50 cm spacing: smaller plants are best planted closer together, larger ones further apart. Container-grown cherry laurel can be planted all year round as long as the ground is not frozen, but the best times are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). Summer planting calls for regular watering.
Plant at the same depth as the plant sat in its container: the top of the root ball should be level with the soil, because cherry laurel planted too deep struggles to develop. Make the planting hole a little over twice as wide as the root ball, mix the excavated soil with a nutrient-rich planting medium, water thoroughly after planting and cover the base with mulch.
