Leyland cypress develops dense, fine-textured, dark green foliage, takes trimming well and tolerates windy spots too. Thanks to its rapid growth it is ideal for a tall privacy hedge – up to 3–5 metres – along street fronts and property boundaries. We take care of the entire installation: soil preparation with a nutrient-rich planting medium, planting along a string line, watering-in, mulching and drip irrigation on request. Leyland cypress planting: spacing and timing
We plant Leyland cypress along a string line, typically at 80–100 cm spacing, so a 10-metre hedge needs 10–13 plants. Because it grows so fast, there is no need to plant more densely than this: the plants will still close up within a few years.
Container-grown Leyland can be planted all year round as long as the ground is not frozen, but the best times are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). Summer planting calls for regular watering. Plant at the same depth as the plant sat in its container, mix the excavated soil with a nutrient-rich planting medium, then water thoroughly after planting and cover the base with mulch.

How much does Leyland cypress hedge planting cost?
The cost is made up of the plants and the installation. The price of the plants depends on their size – a larger, 150–200 cm specimen costs more but screens immediately – while the number of plants follows from the length of the hedge and the 80–100 cm spacing. The installation labour is affected by the condition of the soil, how accessible the site is and the extras you choose (drip irrigation, mulch, removal of the old hedge). Trimming: keeping it in shape
Because it grows so fast, Leyland needs 1–2 trims a year to stay dense and well shaped. Always cut only into the green, growing part, because it will not re-sprout from old, brown wood – which is why trimming must never be put off for years. Leyland cypress or cherry laurel?
Both are excellent evergreen hedges, but for different needs:
- Leyland cypress: the fastest – 80–100 cm of growth a year, screening up to 3–5 metres and fine, dense foliage; needs 1–2 trims a year.
- Cherry laurel: large glossy leaves, grows 40–60 cm a year and forms a solid 2–3 metre wall; tolerates almost any soil and takes trimming well.
